THE 2019 REVIEW.

Wow , What a year that was, from both a personal and photographic point of view !

This year certainly had a sweet and sour flavour to it and as I write this the bitter taste of electoral failure remains. The big news for me photographically is that I completed The State Of Britain project 2015 -2019 , I now have to find ways of sharing this work with a larger audience,

A period of rest might benefit this work and myself , as things are still a bit raw here in the UK !

The year started slowly for me as it often does , although the first serious shoot of the year delivered what might be my best pic of the year, like many of my urban landscapes I had pre-visualised this shot and the kind of conditions needed , I was prepared to wait …..

February delivered a decent start to my 2019 photographic year .

February delivered a decent start to my 2019 photographic year .

I was contacted by Barcelona based photo mag Dodho earlier this year and given the opportunity to share some work from The State Of Britain series with their international audience, this was the first endorsement of this series , interesting that it came from outside the UK ?

I am also grateful for the support I received from the kind folk at online photography magazine Togspace , appreciated !

In March I was invited by The Martin Parr Foundation to attend the Only Human exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery , the man himself led the tour around the gallery , I enjoyed both the work and Martins insights of this memorable “best of” exhibition . I regret that I did not make better use of my Parr Foundation membership this year , sometimes life & work gets in the way !

In April I attended the 1980’s British Photography Symposium at The Martin Parr Foundation , this was one of the highlights of my photographic year, as the eighties was not only a important time for my own photographic development , but possibly the decade when British Art Photography came of age. The speakers are listed below.

10.00 / Anna Fox
11.10 / Jem Southam
12.10 / Karen Knorr
13.00 / lunch
14.30 / Paul Graham
15.40 / Chris Killip
17.15 / panel discussion

I managed to photograph one of my photographic heroes Chris Killip at the syposium , we chatted about Walker and Wallsend and the infamous Scrogg Inn, our local pub for a time . A picture of the pub can be seen in the In flagrante dummy book held in the archive at The Parr Foundation. I can not overstate the effect that Killip , Knottinam and all things Side Gallery had on me during the mid 70’s early 80’s ! To see your everyday photographed and interpreted by photographers of this caliber was a huge help for me as a young photographer .

Great to meet one of my teenage photographic heroes !

Great to meet one of my teenage photographic heroes !

In June I returned to Tyneside to say goodbye to a friend and revisited the familiar locations of my life on Tyneside. I revisited the site of my old school (demolished) , the house in Walker where I grew up and the area around the former Swan Hunters Shipyard in Wallsend, this really was a trip down memory lane. The High Street in Wallsend was much quieter than the bustle of my memories , I was also saddened to see The Ship In The Hole, (ship Inn) gone !

As the year progressed the division and uncertainty of Brexit continued and I did my best to maintain the State Of Britain series , the effects of the political conflicts were not easy to see & photograph in my day to day, real world, although you could photograph a protest march every weekend if you wanted ! I started looking for more symbolic views that reflected how I was feeling rather than make more pictures of conflict and the effects of austerity , I was surprised how the colour palette and distress of this found view reflected social vandalism and anxiety , serendipity ?

This picture could well be adopted as the signature picture of this era and this series .

The distress, colour palette and subject of this found view reflected my feelings of Britain this year perfectly !

As the year progressed I continued to photograph my everyday as I went about my life , as the political debates continued the economic effects of Brexit uncertainty impacted upon my local economy and community , this uncertain trading climate led to my employer seeking redundancies on a voluntary basis due to difficult trading conditions , I volunteered to go and became unemployed !

In October I traveled to London to photograph The Peoples Vote March as I had come across very few folk who supported a remain position in rural Gloucestershire, The protest provided me with a number of important photographs, and was a memorable optimistic day , The portrait below and the Unicorn picture are amongst my favorite images from 2019 , the unicorn pic is a real grower as it is rich in metaphor and symbolism !

I have no desire to write about recent events as I’m still suffering from Brexit / Election fatigue ! I’m delighted to have completed The State Of Britain series and will be pleased to put 2019 behind me . It’s probably too early to understand the consequences and reality of what has just happened !

The series is made up of 236 captures that I have edited down to a series of sixty sequenced photographs .

Looking back I’ve achieved far more this year than I thought I had when I started writing this , I am really looking forward to 2020 !

Thanks to everyone who has supported my work over the last 12 months and good luck with your personal photography ! Best wishes for the New Year !

Merry Christmas

No irony intended !

A dog is for life , not just for Christmas !

WINTER SONG

When winter's shadowy fingers
First pursue you down the street
And your boots no longer lie
About the cold around your feet

Do you spare a thought for summer
Whose passage is complete
Whose memories lie in ruins
And whose ruins lie in heat
When winter comes howling in

When the wind is singing strangely
Blowing music through your head
And your rain splattered windows
Make you decide to stay in bed

Do you spare a thought for the homeless tramp
Who wishes he was dead
Or do you pull your bedclothes higher
Dream of summertime instead?
When winter comes howling in

The creeping cold has fingers
That caress without permission
And mystic crystal snowdrops
Only aggravate the condition

Do you spare one thought for the gypsy
With no secure position
Who's turned and spurned by village and town
At the magistrate's decision
When winter comes howling in

When the turkey's in the oven
And the Christmas presents are bought
And Santa's in his module
He's an American astronaut

Do you spare one thought for Jesus
Who had nothing but his thoughts
Who got busted just for talking
And befriending the wrong sorts?
When winter comes howling in
When winter comes howling in

The State Of Britain 2015 -2019

Those of you who follow my Twitter account will be aware that I plan to call the State Of Britain series complete this year , I never expected the Brexit narrative to continue into 2019 or for it to be unresolved , although the open ended ending does feel right to me , it leaves room for a sequel , should the “Project Fear” predictions prove to be correct ?

I have sequenced the pictures with a tight almost brutal edit and it is looking good, even if I say so myself , I love the way these images bounce off each other when used in a double page spread book layout ! When viewed collectively the project definitely becomes more than the sum of its parts !

SOB141-blog.jpg

I photographed a broken Britain during 2015, before I acknowledged The “State” Of Britain theme formally in 2016, I decided to undertake this visual survey of my country & everyday life when my instincts told me that the times & events ahead could reshape the social, physical and political landscape of Britain forever.

Government policies of austerity, created a Britain that was more divided than ever before, homelessness, rough sleeping and food-bank use reached record levels as the UK’s future with Europe remained uncertain, people appeared to be hungry for change. ?

On the 12th of December 2019 a Tory Government was re-elected “to get Brexit done” !

This series gives visual insights into British identity, aspirations & uncertainty .

I approached this series with a mindset of survey, inquiry and creativity , the completed project integrates a social documentary approach with a Street Photography ethos .

These pictures were never intended to be yesterdays news pictures, this work should be seen as considered reflections of the Brexit era !

This work reflects the faces, places & events from my everyday life , 2015 - 2019 .

Don't Be A Doormat !

I have been ashamed by the new lows that the British Media have reached this week , its at times like this that we can all see the real influence of those who pay what appears to be a army of pipers, in the interests of the few. Make no mistake the British people are being robbed of a fare and free election by the media barons !

I will never be able to support anything other than a socialist agenda personally , but above all else I believe in democracy and trust the wisdom of the electorate, however I have to admit that the current Tory “leadership” and the lack of media fairness actually scares me, this current bunch appear to lack any level of morality or empathy , they treat the processes of democracy and those they should represent with contempt ! .

The current political climate in Britain feels like the early days of a political coup to me !

As a working photographer, I photographed many of the “old skool” Tories as part of my work , I knew they did not represent my best interests or understand the everyday economic challenges of ordinary working class folk ,but I never feared them , to see Heseltine speak on a anti Tory platform this week shocked me, but it did not surprise me !

A combination of elitism , entitlement and social apathy make this current crop of Tories unusually Dangerous , especially if your one of the more vulnerable members of UK society !

Don’t be distracted by the flotsam and jetsam of today’s political debates , focus on the growing numbers of children living in poverty , focus on those sleeping rough and focus on those relying on food-banks ! These are the unforgivable effects of political austerity created by this malicious uncaring government !

This election is a “Oven Ready” opportunity to get rid of this deceitful, divisive, delusional Tory leadership & government , Do the right thing !

I’m not sure if I should reread Animal Farm or 1984 this weekend as both titles are beginning to read more like none fiction as each day passes ?

George Orwell is beginning to take on the vibe of a soothsayer !

Until next time , keep it real ….

Never Look Back ?

If the capture is the equivalent of composing the music and the final print the performance , where does that leave the edit ?

When I say edit , I’m not referring to the digital optimisation of the selected images , this is about image selection , although fundamental, I learnt this week that choosing the “best” frames from a shoot is not as easy or conclusive as it appears to be ! I have just discovered a frame that might be more significant than the frame I selected from this shoot first time around , I’m asking myself ?

A. How did I miss this ?

B, Have my visual tastes changed over the last few years ?

C, How many other “undiscovered” frames remain in my archive ?

Interestingly the frame in question is the frame before “the frame” , so I must conclude that I was so distracted and self satisfied by the frame I did select that I stopped seeing objectively , although my tastes may have changed over the years too ?

I missed this frame during the first edit and discovered it this week !

I missed this frame during the first edit and discovered it this week !

Those who edit the work of photographers professionally often claim that photographers themselves are the worst editors of their own work , I’m sure this is true as photographers are too close to the work to bring the necessary levels of objectivity to the table to make solid decisions, anyone who doubts this should check out The Big Book , W. Eugene Smith .

The takeaway point from this blog is that we must all miss viable shots during the edit , it might be a good idea to revisit our shoots & selections more often with fresh eyes, especially during the winter months when the photographic conditions outside are little more challenging and we have a bit more time ! You might be surprised by what you find , especially amongst the frames either side of what you once thought of as your more successful captures !

They say you should never look back , I’m not sure I agree ?

Until next time , keep it real !

Looking For The Millions !

Those of you who read last weeks blog will be aware that I shot The Peoples Vote March in London last weekend as part of my State Of Britain project . I’m pleased to report the weather and the protesters were both pleasant and warm , I enjoyed the shoot immensely ! I managed to capture a few shots of the march itself but to be honest I was more interested in the quieter shots that could be found on the fringes of the main event.

This view reminded me of a Cold War Steve composition !

This view reminded me of a Cold War Steve composition !

The symbolism of this guy inspecting the rear end of this unicorn caught my eye, it does make me smile ! I know that I shouldn’t be surprised by the surprises real life presents to me , but I am , this is why I still shoot Street ?

I think its important to stay patient and calm despite the chaos of days like this , keep watching and looking, try to see how you can blend the various elements of a scene together , try to see the whole picture and the detail simultaneously !

The takeaway point of this post is encourage others to shoot a alternative narrative, especially when the main event is well covered by other photographers and media, another protest picture is just another protest picture ! , it can pay to find some space and develop your own way of interpreting the days events, maybe add a little humour ! . My solution is quite often to escape the maddness of the masses and search out quieter alternative compositions .

Until next time , keep it real !

I'll Get My Coat !

The Brexit story I’ve been photographing for the last 3 years finally caught up with me this week , as I agreed a redundancy package with my employer , like many other UK based businesses the company I worked for has been wrestling with difficult trading conditions during 2019 , manufacturing’s loss will hopefully become photography’s gain ?

I have “enjoyed” the ups and downs of the photographic lifestyle for most of my life and see this latest bump in the road as yet another challenge of our uncertain times, this full time employment allowed me the rare luxury of working on my personal projects exclusively ! Alternative income streams are now essential to fund both my life and my work !

The positive spin is that I am now time rich !

SOB205-blog.jpg

The irony of the situation is not wasted on me, I have become a casualty of the never ending Brexit story that I have been documenting and interpreting since June 2016.

Recent events will necessitate me keeping the wolf away by working freelance once again , selling open edition prints and offering photo-guiding services. I will continue to work on The State Of Britain project.

Those of you interested in my photographic services , open edition prints or my photo guiding services can contact me through the contact page on this website .

I’m heading off to London today to photograph what could be the last Brexit protests and maybe, just maybe the beginning of the end of The State Of Britain project ? ,

Thanking you for your anticipated support !

Until next time keep it real …

Amateur Photographer, Happy Birthday !

Congratulations to AP for making it 135 years of publication , this is especially remarkable when you consider that photography itself did not exist until 1885 and the digital revolution has almost rewritten the technical landscape of the photographic process !

I have to confess to having a emotional attachment to this publication , this magazine takes me back to my teenage years on Tyneside when British Art Photography and myself were both finding our photographic feet, this publication lit the fire within me and convinced me to pursue a photographic lifestyle, I attended a full time photography course as a aimless 16 year old .

The 1970’s was a time of social change and challenges, nationally and personally , I found my escape within the pages of this mag, looking back it was aimed firmly at male readers who were buying camera kit , the best selling issues usually featured pictures of women wearing bikinis on the front cover , Fleet Streets finest would reflect weekly on recent pictures and stories with lots of camera name dropping going on , although it should be said that the educational ,technical and technique features were second to none at this time !

The classifieds featured a dubious “Models” section , not to be confused with “Dubious Models” ? , the publications readers appeared to be obsessed with glamour photography.

I have memories of Victor Blackman , Geoffrey Crawley and even Bob Carlos Clarke talking the talk on these pages against a backdrop of reviews for cameras that were way out of my reach financially , I stumbled on with a humble second hand £5.00 Cosmic 35 & Patterson tank before buying my Yashica Mat LM TLR for £30 from a generous neighbor, the money came from my first weekly wage, in fact it was my entire first wage and best buy ever ! I still own this camera , it changed my life !

Everyone needs help when they are starting out !

Everyone needs help when they are starting out !

This magazine taught me what photography could be with a bit of care and consideration.

Thanking AP for holding my hand through the early days of my photography and the digital revolution , really appreciated !

I always buy the Christmas edition of Amateur Photographer as one of my Christmas traditions , perhaps we should all support this iconic British publication more .

Happy 135th Birthday AP , enjoy many more !

Don't Be Shy !

Does British Street Photography suffer from upmarket aspirations or is Street Photography in this country practiced by a disproportionate number of middle class photographers , who just happen to hangout in “desirable” locations ?

Many of the London based photographers work the tourist traps but very few give a sense of their real domestic everyday , I wonder if togs in the UK subconsciously adopt a generic international Street vibe instead of promoting a more revealing British aesthetic , whatever that is ?

I, like everyone else, love to work on warm sunny days that throw up interesting shadows and well populated locations, however , I do wonder if these “perfect” days misrepresent our country, our weather and our lives !

SOB204-blog.jpg

I shot some very ordinary locations this week in flat light , I confess these pictures are probably more Documentary than Street but they do feel more honest to me than the style of captures I often produce .

With titles like Corner-shop or Terraced Street , these recent images just feel right for these times .

Don’t be shy, try to capture a few everyday views closer to your home , you might be surprised how your real life, really looks !

Until next time , keep it real !

SOB202-blog.jpg

Right & Wrong !

Back in 2016 I captured a image at the Dickens Festival in Broadstairs that could be read as a metaphor for recent events in British politics , strangely , at the time of capture I believed this image was a bit over the top, melodramatic and pessimistic to survive my final edit of The State Of Britain series , recent parliamentary exchanges and events have made me reconsider this view !

I do not wish to debate the merits of any political position here, I simply want to mourn the loss of respect and civility within our political system , I set out to document the “Brexit Era” from a personal everyday perspective and knew it would be a bumpy ride , my aim was to create a personal project that delivered a little more insight than a few predictable deadpan portraits of fisherman and protesters , no more no less , I did not expect the nation to self destruct , I did not anticipate the toxic climate of fear that exists in Britain today .

SOB121-twit.jpg

The visual manifestations of the “Brexit Effect” , are difficult to see , my everyday looks pretty much as it always has . The invisible presence of uncertainty is sowing destructive seeds of division and mistrust !

As a photographer all I can do is capture the images that represent these times with a sense of integrity, balance and responsibility , hopefully these pictures will help me understand these difficult times in the years ahead, I’m struggling with the narrative now ?

This political crisis is not about right and left anymore, this impasse is about right and wrong !

Sometimes I regret starting this project .

Until next time be safe and keep it real !
