Every now and then life falls into place and delivers a abundance of photographic gifts but you have to be ready to recognise and accept them …
The picture featured here is one of a short series that fell into my lap and was shot within a few hours , these sinkhole pictures are all based around huge site specific paintings that depict historic scenes that appear to give a glimpse of our Roman heritage , the paintings rely on being viewed from one particular viewpoint in order to enjoy the realistic perspective , they are simply laid on the ground and become especially effective when combined with the reality of life from the twenty first century , this is not a computer effected image, this is surrealism as found !
Most of my Street Photography involves trying to make something from nothing but that is not the case here , this is more a case of starting with something that is very photographable and having to do nothing , well not very much anyway !
Just because these “Sinkhole” pictures are easy to see and capture does not make them second best to me , its all too easy to get caught up in the “ I hung from a tree by my bollocks for 3 hours before firing the shutter“ narrative , difficulty and complexity of capture does not add extra value in my opinion , it either works or it doesn’t , no one care’s about the “difficulties” …
Keep it simple , collect the low bearing fruit where and when you can without guilt , your the one who recognized the photo opportunity …
These photographic gifts do not turn up everyday , you really have to make the most of them when they do , don’t regret the pictures you failed to make and don’t fall into the hole of unnecessary complexity …
Why shoot a single pic when a short series awaits …
