THE FOTO WHAT I TOOK , NO 31 , 2012.

As photographers we often walk in the footprints of photographers who have gone before , knowingly and sometimes subconsciously …

We are all products of our cumulative life experiences , books , music , education etc. . I think its fair to say that our better photographs frequently give away insights of who we are , whether we like it or not …

Tony Ray Jones influenced my personal photography and many other togs of my generation but I never really knew how deep this “Influence” ran until I shot the picture below , this picture is almost a composite of a few TRJ photographs , I was both shocked and delighted when I checked the screen on the back of my camera for the first time following this capture, I was on holiday in Majorca at the time and I felt a bit “exposed” as I had not engaged with the TRJ work for years , this pic was spontaneous and created within my subconscious but I can not deny where or when the foundations of this picture were made , this picture revealed more about me than I intended …

I had never taken my personal photography seriously until I made this capture , I had always thought of commercial commissioned photography as serious and my personal photography as play , looking back I got this wrong , the opposite is probably true …

This picture represents a photographic crossroads for me , this was the day I saw the light …

This is the picture that inspired my Another Day Off series , the series is no more than a informal personal enquiry into the TRJ effect on me & my work , these pictures were made for me , I always wanted to find out how my pics would look if I was free of client demands and commercial influences , I had lived in the front line of photography for money for most of my life , I needed to discover myself photographically !

If you are unfamiliar with the work of Tony Ray Jones a treat awaits you , I envy you seeing his work for the first time …

In my view no one else has managed to pull off the TRJ mix of empathy , wit and surrealism within their pictures , I see some “Street” photographers rolling with a agenda of visual sarcasm and deprecation , this mean spirited approach does not cut it with me , it betrays the TRJ legacy of visual wit , compassion and warmth …

Our personal photographs really do reflect who we are , you might want to remember that …

Study the work of Tony Ray Jones and discover what photography can be , he never took the piss out of anyone , you have to be a decent person before you can become good photographer …

What should you expect from a Street Photography photo shoot ?

I’m not sure I have a definitive answer to this question , my expectations change with time , in the current climate of uncertainty I’m making pictures that possess a realistic “Doc-Vibe” rather than a pretty picture arty aesthetic , Street Photography feels frivolous at the moment , I think its important to connect my work with my life right now …

It’s important to create a level of expectation within yourself , it helps to identify who you are as a photographer and pursue a direction of travel morally , technically and aesthetically , we have a obligation to work responsibly …

How flexible is your integrity ?

The picture below is from my Testing Times project , I shot this Covid themed series during 2020 and the first half of 2021 , this picture reminds me of the chaos and uncertainty that folk lived through at this time , lockdown ensured that pictures that reflected the frustrations and challenges of everyday life were especially hard to find at this time , this is a one frame candid capture that reflects the every day pressures of everyday life that were felt by many during the pandemic era …

I always value pictures that reflect how life feels over how life looks , I don’t ”Expect” it to happen very often as its a hard trick to perform but I recognise & appreciate significance when it appears in my viewfinder …

I always hesitate before writing about my “Dream” pictures , you’ll understand why when you read on …

Those of you who have read my blogs over the last few years will be familiar with my claim of what I now call “Dream Pictures” , these are pictures that appear in my dreams before I have seen them or captured them ?

There you are , I’ve said it !

It doesn’t happen very often and it hasn’t happened for a while but the truth is that I see photographs in my dreams that I have not yet made …

I understand if your skeptical , I would be too if I was reading this but it is what it is , in mitigation I should add that Paul McCartney claims to have dreamt some of his songs too !

I’m happy to accept help wherever it comes from , even if that help comes from the most dubious and unlikely of sources …

Todays picture comes from my Another Day Off series , a study of British leisure time , the strange thing is , I never dream of “bad” pictures with wonky horizons , out of focus subjects and blurry movement …

The wonky , out of focus , blurry stuff is usually created within my conscious mind , deliberately …

Unicorns became a important symbol during the Brexit era , protesters used them as a metaphor for untruths and fantasies , this particular inflatable unicorn features in my State Of Britain series twice !

You could be forgiven for thinking this pic must be a set up but you would be mistaken , the bloke at the back end of the unicorn is not looking for Boris’s £350 NHS millions as the picture suggests , he is actually trying to fix a well placed puncture during a anti- Brexit protest in London , the comedic value of this “Unfortunate Accident” was not wasted on me , one mans puncture became another mans photo opportunity …

Brexit divisions still remain in the UK as the State Of Britain series ages gracefully , these pictures are becoming increasingly significant during these chaotic , uncertain times , time does strange things to photographs , in a good way …

I make no apologies for writing such a short blog today , some pictures don’t need too many words …

Did the weekly £350 million to the NHS ever turn up or was it just a fantasy ?

Don’t mention “Inflation” !

This is a bit of an odd capture , not great but odd …

Like every “Street” photographer worth their salt I’m always on the lookout for signs , signals or body language that indicates future behavior , I need as much info as I can get in order to predict what might happen next in order to plan my next capture , its not all luck and intuition this “Street” malarkey , you have to read the room or the public space in this case , like a poker player looking for discreet tells …

The guy in this picture was part of a group , truth be told I thought a scuffle was about to break out especially when everyone stepped back , pointing their phones at this young guy , the framing and the timing of this picture proves that I had no idea what was about to happen next !

Following a short delay this guy just back flipped from a standing start , he did not repeat it , I know no more than that , it might of been a bet ?

I know its not a great photograph but it is a great moment , you never know what a days Street Photography will deliver …

I’m always on the lookout for folk getting ready to make pictures on their phones , it might be the first sign of a Street photo op , that didn’t happen in the pre-mobile, telephone box olden days , you have to adapt , its a case of old dog , new tricks …

I quite like the chaos of this composition too …

Photography has been a serious business to me for most of my life , that’s why I embrace the opportunity to bring a playful mindset to my pictures whenever I can …

Surprise , serendipity , chance , luck and anything else beyond my control is worthy of pursuit within my own personal photography , the “What If” question fuels much of my photographic thinking nowadays , good technique is good for creating predictable , repeatable results but its not exactly the walk on the wild side I crave …

Risk is the great fear for many photographers as they fight for control of every photographic variable for fear of getting it “WRONG” , don’t fear failure , fear not knowing the reward of creative risk !

Lets be clear wrong is right , if you deliberately do it wrong , allowing risk into your creative process rewards the brave , the digital medium is perfect for “Chancers” as it can inform on a continuous improvement basis , one persons failure can become another’s success …

The picture below is a pinhole selfie that I shot on World Wide Pinhole Day , pinhole photography really is a invitation to “Play”, make sure you give it a go at least once , it might just set you free from the burden of maintaining “Good” technique …

Be aware it is addictive …

Surprise , a bit of movement , a bit of blur , a bit of this and a lot of that , discover the freedom of shooting without a lens, its great fun …

The complexities within this tableau fascinate me , its all going on here , although I’m not quite sure what exactly is going on !

What I do know is that the deeper you look into this scene the more you see , I believe the event is connected to a English Civil War reenactment group but beyond that I have few explanations , yes that is a canon in the background !

Why does the central figure have two handbags ?

The social interactions displayed here provide more questions than answers and that’s fine by me , pictures have no obligation to resolve , narrative is in the eye of the beholder , if it needs to exist at all …

This busy chaotic composition is stronger for its ambiguity , it reflects the surreal diversity of England , past , present and future and always makes me smile …

I’ve really enjoyed reacquainting myself with this picture today , I know It’s just another Saturday afternoon in England but I like it …

Everywhere or should that be anywhere can be the right place for your next photographic masterpiece !

This is a view from a socially distant queue at the local medical centre , it happened in front of me as I stood in line , waiting to speak to the “inconveniently placed” wall mounted intercom …

I have to confess to wearing a camera around my neck continuously during my everyday lockdown life , good picture opportunities were few and far between during the early pandemic days , I could not afford to risk missing significant photo - ops , I knew good photo opportunities would arrive if I remained patient and stayed switched on …

This picture is part of my Testing Times project and one of my favorites from this series , it is a genuine documentary photograph but it possesses classic Street Photography vibes and still makes me smile , smiles were hard to find during 2020 as they were all hidden behind face masks …

I should point out that the “Headless” figure in this picture is more than a comic visual device , the “visual decapitation” of this patient allowed me to maintain & respect his privacy and anonymity …

This is a serious candid picture that depicts the challenges faced by many of us who struggled to access NHS services during the pandemic , one in five patients experienced mental health issues during the Covid crisis and the hangover remains …

Lets not forget the medical folk who faced the risks of Covid everyday at this time and still do , I’m grateful to everyone of them …

Keeping your head during the uncertainty of the Covid crisis became the big challenge for all of us during what are still “Testing Times” …

… the “visual decapitation” ensures that the figure maintains his privacy and anonymity …

Some pictures require a different kind of “seeing” , a deeper analysis of what your actually being confronted with visually !

Although this moment is static I still consider this to be a “Special” moment , certainly serendipitous , relying on a number of “coincidences” , including a glimpse of “Time Travel” ?

The background of this picture is made up of padlocked building site gates that have been tidied up with photographic representations from the past to reduce the “Eye Sore” effect , strangely the old monochromatic photo depicts parked vintage cars, that appear to be ignoring the modern red “NO PARKING” sign added by a site worker with a real sense of context , the juxtaposition is completed by a real modern car being parked up against the “Vintage” gates that is ignoring the no parking sign too !

This picture is enhanced by the monochromatic qualities of the composition which in turn enhances the isolated colour of the fortuitous red sign !

Although this view is as found , it is not spontaneous as I had visualised the possibility of this shot more than a week before making the capture when a yellow car was in position , sometimes the wrong thing informs me of what is really needed , you know when its not right !

Thankfully this white car with black windows turned up …

You have to be aware of good fortune when it arrives , I was ready and waiting for this , one week later …

This is a full colour capture , without any digital shenanigans …

Do photographs adapt , evolve or shape shift with time ?

We all accept that the pictures we make are slices of time that are fixed & frozen forever but many of us also acknowledge that a unusual metamorphosis can occur within many works as the years pass …

This is from The State Of Britain series , in fact I shot this candid pic in 2015 before I started the project properly . This picture really does demonstrate how the narrative of photographs can be adapted subconsciously to our own fears , beliefs and prejudices …

When I made this capture I saw this image as a picture that depicted a narrative of safety, security and protection provided by the young woman , the UK flag and the US eagle , remember this was 2015 , this was a time before Brexit arrived in UK politics , a time when Obama led the US and the union flag had not been poisoned by nationalism , it seems like a long time ago …

Strangely this candid image appears to shape-shift with the political landscape on both sides of the Atlantic , I saw the Eagle as a crazed threat during the Trump years , proof if proof were needed that some photographs really do metamorphosise and take on a life of their own in our heads …

How do you read this image today , the symbolism goes way beyond my original intentions and will probably change again in the future …
