The Foto What I Took , No 1 , 2015

Welcome to the first of a series of short blogs that are based around pictures from my archive , I hope the words that accompany the featured pictures give context , explanation and inspiration to readers .

Older readers might recognise the source of “inspiration” for the “The Foto What I Took” blog title , answers on a postcard …

I made this picture in 2015 while standing outside in the rain “enjoying” a cigarette , back in the days when I still smoked , seems like a lifetime ago , anyway , as I stood there I noticed how my reflection could be merged with the “Daily Mail Reader” on the other side of the glass , I was even more impressed when I realised that it was possible to place the strangers head strategically within this unusual composition , giving a surreal appearance …

I knew that the camera could not be lifted to my eye as that would have shown in the refection and signaled my photographic intentions to “Daily Mail Reader” , sometimes you just have to wing it , hope for the best and keep your fingers crossed !

I should point out that it is not rare for me to make Street captures without using the viewfinder , I have a hotshoe spirit level fixed permanently on my camera to accommodate this approach

This subject within a reflection of the photgrapher technique was used extensively by Vivean Maier with her TLR camera , reminds me of the advantages of wearing dark clothes on a Street Shoot, especially if we intend to “Borrow” the techniques of “Giants” as we walk in their footprints …

I hope you’ve enjoyed this picture and this new format of blog , let me know …

A picture from 2015 that lives in The David Barrett Archive and the Another Day Off series .

Vanity is Insanity ...

Why does it cost so much to join the Documentary Photography Club ?

The truth is that it does not have to , especially in the digital age , once you get past kitting yourself out , you can make a start with no more than a tale to tell , some serious intent and a way to share your pictures !

The sharing pictures bit seems to be the place where good people get lost , exploited and misled , it does not have to be like that , lets clear a few things up …

Photographs no longer posses the uniqueness that they once did , as the saying goes everyone’s a photographer now , I’m not sure I agree with that but the fact is that more than 1.4 trillion photographs were made in 2021 and that is expected to increase in 2022 as the Covid threat recedes. That is not to say that 1.4 trillion “Good” pics were made in 2021 but the medium of still photographs can not compete with TV as a first choice visual medium .

More importantly the market for Documentary Photography is not what it once was but that doesn’t appear to impact on photographers wanting to tell their stories with still cameras / camera phones . Educational establishments are still churning out more togs with Doc & Editorial aspirations than the world needs right now , truth be told photographer supply has been greater than the international demand for professional photographers for many years !

The harsh reality is that you are unlikely to become the next “Big Thing” , photographers who are very talented , hard working and connected are blessed with more downtime than ever before right now , so the space for newcomers is shrinking , the thing you need to be sure of is your motivation , if your plan is to make shit loads of cash by photographing socially challenged folk , your heading for a fall , financially and morally !

In short you should believe that the subject of your Doc Photography is compelling on a personal level , visually interesting and ideally threatened by some form of societal change , you need to be committed financially , emotionally and sufficiently time rich to get a project over the finishing line , do it for you and you alone , if others like it that’s a bonus …

Having ticked all the boxes so far a outlet for your “Documentary Masterpiece” needs to be identified , or does it ?

This is your first real test , the real priority is to get the project in the can , putting the cart before the horse with dreams of book deals etc is not helpful , think back to your motivation , share a few pics on line to gauge reaction but don’t be distracted , vanity is insanity in publishing !

“VANITY” that is where the problems start , togs by their nature believe that the work they make is better than it really is , projects are shot with little thought for commercial viability , does the world really need your photo project or is your current series self indulgent ?

Self indulgence is fine so long as your expectations are managed , the secret of happiness in personal self initiated Documentary Photography is to share your work online until a real life paid opportunity reveals itself , most Doc projects age well , so don’t be in a hurry to self publish in print , the money saved could fund your next project , pay the rent or feed and heat your family for a month or three !

The current trend for photographers to self publish at any cost does not sit well with me , many togs see publication as a endorsement of their talent , skill and vision , know this , the new larger audience for photo-books is not as discerning as it once was , this is probably linked to new funding models and the “Fact” that we are all photographers now ?

Social media popularity is no reflection of ability in todays Photo-Land or should that be La La Land ?

Don’t pay to have your work included in a book or allow free usage of your work , it will not be “Good” exposure , it will send a message that your photography is worth nowt , or less than nowt if you have paid for the “Privilege” of inclusion !

Don’t get caught up in the vanity of print publishing , the kudos of self publishing will soon wear off when your stuck with hundreds of unsold books in the attic , remember selling your Photo-Book will not be nearly as engaging as shooting your next project , there are only so many hours in a day , do you really want to pay for the privilege of becoming a book seller ?

Hundreds of the famous A1 Great North Road Photo Book by Paul Graham languished in Paul’s loft for ages before the world discovered him and his work , think about that …

In short , aim to make your photography publishing profitable , this mentality will help you focus on the reality of the demand for your work rather than being carried away with unrealistic hope , optimism and charity , like I said , vanity is insanity in all things photo- book publishing !

If you insist on following the Photo-Book road ensure that you have the support of good distribution , printing only 1000 copies will not enable you to keep the wolf away for long , if your very lucky you might break even ?

If you can afford to self publish with the same mentality as backing a horse in the Grand National then make the wager but if you live your life without a financial safety net , don’t !

Profit is not a dirty word , it’s the difference between creative folk feeling safe and secure in a uncertain world …

If your not blessed with piles of cash beware of those trying to exploit your photographic aspirations , many care not one jot for your photography ,

Take care and beware of the old vanity publishing scam in all its forms , Grandmaster Flash knew a thing or two about photo-book publishing …

It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under

Ha ha ha ha …

PS : Keeping and maintaining a good personal website might help early career togs reach a larger audience , build a following & create print sales , online self publication is not second best , its flexible , always accessible and free to your audience , a great place to learn as you develop , sequence and share your ongoing projects before jumping into the abyss , I know you still want to jump into the abyss , you think your the one …

You might be , good luck …

Beat The Futility ...

In troubled times photographers can beat the futility by staying engaged , the brown stuff we ‘ve been wading through during the last two years might be getting deeper but we have to keep on , keeping on …

Your photography can and should become your mental safe space if your struggling with the uncertainties of recent events , I have to admit that my personal photography has helped me to get through the last two years , I’ll be relying on my solo photo-walks to get me through the current crisis too . Despite being a Street Photographer I have found a level of solace in the local landscape , something about open spaces and woodlands that refreshes the soul in troubled times …

If your urban based and unable to escape your city go for a walk along the local river or canal , the combination of water and big skies has always raised my spirits during dark days !

As I write this (Thursday) I’m hearing unconfirmed reports of protests in Russia against the attacks on Ukraine , that has certainly lifted my spirits and reminded me that ordinary Russian folk just want to live in peace too , its easy to forget that amongst the “Confusion” …

This weekend I’m going to try and make a few Yellow and Blue themed pics to show my solidarity with Ukraine , I know it won’t change anything or help anyone but it will help me get through , feel free do the same , you can show your support while staying positive .

I know that the little things like organising your re-cycling might feel futile right now , saving the planet has taken on a different meaning in recent days , collectively we can and will get through this …

Thatcher said there was no such thing as society , what did she know …

If your feeling fragile don’t engage too deeply with events in Eastern Europe , 24 / 7 news will amplify your insecurities and anxieties , seek out the support and company of others …

Stay safe and try to keep on , keeping on ,

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine …

WAGGING THE DOG , PART 2

They say that when you’ve dug a hole for yourself you should stop digging , top advice !

I can’t believe I was daft enough to write a blog that committed me to create a fresh picture for this weekends blog just before Storm Eunice was announced , see part one of this blog to witness what I now look back on as a school boy error !

You know you’ve made a mistake when you wake up to find Sky News reporting on the storm from the car park of a local pub , anyway as I write this ( FRIDAY ) the Hooley is blowing and the rain is passing my windows in a horizontal direction , its a great day for making a few pics , not !

Once the Red Weather Warning arrived I knew that the leisurely photo shoot I had planned was unlikely to become a reality , I needed to get something in the bag sooner rather than later as too many uncontrollable obstacles could scupper my ability to deliver and share a new pic for this blog , it would not be a surprise for me to lose power , internet access etc .

My instincts told me that I needed to drop everything and bring my plans forward , I needed to find one or two pics immediately as this self imposed challenge was becoming increasingly unpredictable ?

Yellow Bulb , Feb 17 2022 . I shot this on Thursday , in a local neighborhood before the storm arrived .

I’m pleasantly surprised by the picture I came back with , as Thursday afternoon didn’t feel like a blue sky day , in fact I got caught in a shower on the way back to the car !

The streets were empty , forcing me to look closer and seek out good light and shadows , proof if proof were needed that photo shoots don’t always go to plan , you have to adapt and make something from not very much if you want to come back with a pic …

Red Bulb , Feb 17 2022 . Hard afternoon sun and a simple graphic approach got me out of my hole , something always turns up if you look deep enough ….

The takeaway from this blog is that photographers should throw themselves into the photographic deep end more frequently , you will almost always swim , on the rare occasions that you fail the learning curve will be steep but worthwhile , on a personal level I must start listening to the weather forecast and stop writing blogs that promise new pics , its also a good idea to listen visually to the location !

You can’t always get what you want but if you try , sometimes you might find …

I enjoyed my photo-walk even though it was a bit rushed , the hardest thing to do for this shoot was the simple act of putting on my shoes , everything got much easier once I get out with the camera …

I think I’m developing a light bulb shadow trigger , makes a change from umbrellas and balloons !

Take care and stay safe if your out and about this weekend …

Today , The Tail Is Wagging the Dog !

Todays blog is like no other , that I have ever read or written …

I know its a big claim but it is true , the difference today is that I have not as yet created the picture that will accompany this piece !

I normally write a piece around a existing pic from a recent shoot or something topical from my archive but truth be told my water well of words & pics is running dry and I am in need of motivation ,photos and words, to that end I have painted myself into a corner , thrown myself into the photographic deep end and created a “must do” supply to demand scenario , this blog needs a new pic and it needs it NOW !

A bit of self inflicted pressure to create never did anyone any harm , truth be told I’m quite looking forward to seeking out this new pic , at this time the subject , location , lighting conditions etc , are all unknown to me ?

This shoot is beginning to sound like fun already , hope I can come back with something half decent …

… this blog needs a new pic and it needs IT SOON !

Nothing like leaving a space for pictures that do not yet exist to motivate photo-activity !

The motivation for todays blog is two fold , the first is to genuinely motivate myself but secondly I want to remind readers that starting your own website , social media feed or zine might just give your photography a knew sense of purpose , as a pro photographer working to tight deadlines it is all part of the lifestyle but personal photography can get caught up in a manyana mentality all too easily, you have to take it seriously if you want to be taken seriously !

In short , set goals, aims and deadlines for your photography , build momentum and create a photo capture habit !

The second month of the year is almost done and I for one have not “Done” much , have you ?

It’s time to kick start 2022 photographically , snooze and you lose …

Stay safe …

PS : No sooner had I finished writing this blog and a weather warning for my area was announced , this was meant to be the weekend blog but my plans have changed , I’m sharing this today as I need to find this blog picture ASAP, storm Eunice is on its way , yikes !!!!

SEE WAGGING THE DOG PART 2 …

Find A Perch !

No not the fish , a comfortable spot to rest , while maintaining a interest in your Street Photography but not necessarily a active interest , a safe place to watch, wait, notice and wait , then wait some more …

I was reminded of this perching principle this week as I shared a few images from my Testing Times Project on Twitter this week , like you , I like the idea of a responsive , reactive approach to Street Photography but I’m not as young as I once was and can’t charge around continuously during a four hour photo-shoot anymore , every now and then I need to stop and look a bit deeper , I quite often stop instinctively , not because I’ve seen a photo opportunity but because I’ve noticed a number of elements that might work as a pic if I can find a way to pull them together , some locations hint that a good pic is possible if you can just look beyond , find the right view , light and moment !

I know that these locations require me to put the time in and wait , then wait and wait some more , Street Photography can’t always be flash , bang , wallop !

Sometimes you have to think about the visual symbolism that a real life location can suggest , the reality of a location is just a starting point !

I think of these locations as perches , this is where I hang out during my down time on those quiet days when the pics are hard to find , this angel location was one of my favorite / comfortable “Roost’s” during 2020 and 2021 , I knew this location could and would deliver if I put the work and time in !

This is the first of many captures at this location , its a heavenly solution to down time , sorry I’ll get me coat …

The take away from todays short blog is to encourage photographers to find and identify a couple of likely spots to return to when you regular route is not delivering , make sure your there when the conditions are just right , then wait until you get a moment of interest , if at first you fail return and fail again , repeat until you succeed , I didn’t say being lucky was easy !

On the days when the world has not read your Street Photography script its nice to have a few locations in mind that might deliver one or two opportunities when all else fails …

This location started off as a bit of fun in January 2020 but took on a more significant , unusual symbolism once the Covid crisis landed …

Find a perch and take it easy , look beyond the reality …

Stay safe ….

Where Are Your Manners ?

Just reading this headline takes me back to bygone days , when manners mattered , allegedly !

Don’t stop reading yet , this is a important photographic blog , you might think manners in the twenty first century are less important than they once were , you might be right but manners matter in photographs !

The thing is we all have behavioral expectations of each other , no one likes to be in the company of someone who turns their back on them , in short this behavior is seen as rude , people with their backs to camera are perceived as being less interesting / interested than folk who face the “Right” way ?

Visually pictures of folk from behind are really strong , emphasiing shape & texture in a graphic way , minimising the subjects personality and creating a broader ambiguous subject appeal …

This composition is deliberately confrontational , notice how shape and form become more important when the face is hidden .

Within our subconscious we expect the subjects in the pictures we make and view to adhere to the same real life etiquette that we live by day to day , “Look at me” , while I engage with you we demand silently as we view the work !

Another convention that seems to be disappearing from portrait photography in particular and photography in general is that of the left to right compositional principles , in case you didn’t know your western brain is hardwired to read type and pictures “Left to Right “, this stuff matters , a portrait that faces out to the right will welcome the viewer with the back of their head ( RUDE ) as apposed to a more welcoming profile view when the sitter looks the opposite way or polite if you like , sometimes you have to accept subjects facing the “Wrong” way if the light dictates the positioning but being aware of the convention will help you select your locations with regard to “Best” light direction !

Ideally we should light our portraits from the left when possible , its only good manners after all …

When I photographed Sirkka-lissa Konttinen the available light entered the frame from the right , you have to be led by the light and ignore the L-R convention when needs must …

The takeaway from todays brief blog is that pictures of people benefit from being lit from the the left , due to the way we we read left to right , however when working with available light this L -R convention is trumped by the necessity to ensure the the subjects face / profile is well lit , basic stuff but it really matters to the viewers subconscious interpretation of your compositions !

Proving once again that your photography should always, always, always be led by the light , and pictures with the main light coming from the left always read better than the pics lit from the right …

Who knew …

When The Going Gets Tough ...

This “top tip” might feel like cheating but sometimes you have to do what you have to do …

Most of the blogs I have ever written celebrate the virtue of hard work , I’m a huge advocate of the old adage which claims to link hard work with “Luck” but exceptions exist , in my mind anyway !

Before I get into this, let me state that laziness is rarely rewarded in Street Photography but this blog might just encourage togs to do less and reap the rewards ?

We’ve all had those days when we’re desperate to make a few pictures but the weather conditions are not playing ball , the central heating is on, and the kettle is giving you the “Hello” look !

Its hard to swap all these distractions for a good soaking in a rain storm and the promise of a few bad weather photographs !

The thing is you don’t have to get wet to find a few “unusual” picture opportunities , you just have to put your shoes on, leave the house and believe that a “Masterpiece” awaits !

This is a view through a steamed up car window , I did a short series of these views and never got out the car !

The bottom line is that pictures can be found during the worst of storms from the sanctuary of a car , a bus or even a bus stop , ensuring that you and your gear stay warm and dry , use rain drops or fogged windows as an effect on the worst of days and discover a new look to your work.

Something is always possible photographically , you may not like the conditions that your stuck with but opportunities will reveal themselves if a open mind and level of enthusiasm can be found & maintained , in short keep looking !

Something is always possible photographically , the bad weather become the subject here …

The takeaway point from this blog is to encourage photographers to throw themselves in the photographic deep end , learn to swim in conditions beyond your physical and creative comfort zone , all weather and lighting conditions are good for something you just have to work WITH the conditions you inherit rather than find excuses for not trying to make pictures , make the most of what is in front of you rather than wishing for ideal circumstances !

When the going gets tough , some of us just sit in the car and let the pictures come to us …

Take whatever comes on the chin , ADAPT !

Please note that all of my car based pictures are created from a safely parked up car , drive by shooting is against the law !

A Walk In The Woods ...

This is not a long walk on the Appalachian Trail , Bill Bryson style , no , no , no …

This was more of a opportunistic drop everything , perfect conditions shoot in my local woodland , within five minutes of leaving home I was walking through a classic winter woodland , complete with frost , low sun and the inevitable atmospheric mist , sometimes I take my “Neighborhood” for granted, its not a bad place to be …

I know I’m a lucky boy but remember I shoot “Street” and my preferred urban environment is fifteen miles away !

I have to be honest a wood as pretty as this is all a bit too classic for me but mornings like this are all about the walk rather than the pictures , this is one of those mornings that calendar photographers dream of , although that’s not really my bag nowadays !

Woodland chaos will challenge your compositional skills , thankfully you’ll get loads of time to find the best compositions . See trees think crowds …

What has this got to do with Street Photography ? …… that’s what I thought , until I got my head into the job in hand !

The problem I have with these woodlands and all other woodlands is that they are all a bit too random , yes random !

Randomness is no good to me , it means I’ve got to try and make some sort of order from what appears to be thoughtless chaos , just like the chaos that attracts me to Street Photography !

These huge wooden things are placed unevenly everywhere without any sense of composition , order or thought for my pictorial agenda , like I said “Random” and thoughtless !

The challenge is to make order from the chaos , not unlike a crowded street in fact , the advantage of woodland photography is that the trees stay still and are much better behaved than the folk on the streets , allowing time to find good compositional solutions and learn at my own pace , its not easy bringing compositional order to chaotic woodlands or busy streets .

Remember all photographic learning and knowledge is good , its up to you to decide if and when to use it !

Finding pockets of good light is also much easier in a empty wood …

Note how the rule of thirds is adopted in the top left and how the branch in the top right is placed neatly in corner , this is not randon .

The takeaway from this blog is that all manner of photography can inform and influence your Street photography , Street is not terribly forgiving , if you miss it first time , it’s gone !

Landscape photography really can help you to develop essential skills without the pressure that the Street demands , in short chill out in the landscape if your not feeling it on the streets at the moment and create at your own pace , its important to keep firing the shutter and maintaining your skills …

Landscape photography will afford you a first , second and third chance to get it right …

It will also put a smile on your face , what’s not to like …

Before I sign off from this blog I’d to do a quick “Hello” plug to a fellow photographer Tim Scanlan who I met “randomly” in my local wood the other day , check out his work at https://timscanlanphotography.com ,

A Cunning Plan !

In a world where Art is only “Proper” if its one of a kind , I have developed a cunning plan !

This plan relies on resources that are plentiful in the modern world and immediately replenish-able , for once I am one step ahead , I have decided to buy all existing supplies of stretched canvases and buy all other canvases in all sizes that will be made in the foreseeable future , I have decided against buying all the acrylic and oil based paints in the world as these will become worthless without my “Specially Primed” canvases to paint upon !

This time next year Rodney …

Having secured the world supply for all canvases I will control the sale of them very carefully and inflate the price , obviously !

Having cornered the market I will sell each canvas to anyone daft enough to meet my artificially inflated price and promise to sell their “Proper Art Works” painted on “Proper” canvas to those who must possess these one off pieces of “Proper” Art at any price !

Everyone will admire how magnificent the “Proper” Art looks on the “Proper” canvases that are sold on a my “Proper” website , these once worthless artworks will become so valuable that folk will frequently steal them on a wholesale basis , clean the art off and re-sell them , it turns out that the “Special” canvases are actually worth more than the Art painted upon them ?

Who knew ?

Bugger , it seems that this cunning plan has not created the monopoly I envisaged , those pesky artists have started painting on paper , cardboard , hardboard etc , worse still folk are still buying Art despite it not being painted on my “Proper” canvases !

Sadly the price of canvases has dropped back to their “Proper” prices and the replenish-able abundance of vanity , greed and stupidity has receded , in fact it has almost vanished , in short the status quo has returned , canvas dealers still make a few quid from dealing in art supplies but not ART …

Bloody canvases , I’ve still got loads of them , their value has dropped back a bit but people seem quite keen on them without the art thankfully, I reckon what the world needs is a 21st century digital version of this “Cunning plan” , it could make someone a fortune …

I’m currently buying paintings that are painted on twenty pound notes for five pounds each if anyone’s interested , I love “Helping” artists me …

I can remember when photos on plates were all the rage , funny old world …

This time next year Rodney …

PS : It would not surprise me if a scheme similar to the one above made some folk loads of cash , I sincerely hope those folk are creative folk but I fear the Stretched Canvas Manufacturers and the Early Investors will be the ultimate winners …

Good luck to any photographers giving this new NFT thing a go …

I’ll be mainly painting on cardboard during 2022 , I can’t afford those “Special” canvases …
