A inscription from a little photo-book ...

HELP , Detectives Needed !

I bought this little secondhand book online years ago, the inscription was not mentioned in the "Good Condition" book description , initially I was a little disappointed until I got to thinking about who might of actually signed this book & who the “Birthday Boy” might of been ...

I shared this pic on Twitter and it got me thinking , especially as Barry of @pixelsonapage seemed to think that the Joel “autograph / Signature” could be “that” Joel so I checked out the Saul “autograph / Signature” samples on line too and my optimism grew , I then looked for a famous Andy who was New York based and got quite a surprise , could be , could be …

Surely not ?

If anyone can fill in the gaps of who the original recipient of this little book was , who signed it or who Lynda is , I’d love to know more , leave me a reply …

I have created my own narrative of who is who here , I would love it to be true and for Chris to be “That” Chris …

Whoever Chris turns out to be you have to be impressed by his list of mates , if they turn out to be who I think they are …

The book is the Phaidon, Joel Meyerowitz , photography book from the 55 series its not valuable in itself but it could become very precious to me , please help if you can …

Todays picture is one of few “Proper” Street Pics from last year , its more a piece of photographic design than a special moment but beggars can’t be choosers !

Its not hard to see what attracted me to this location , the red of the 2 CV with contrasting yellow wheel arches was a good foundation for a decent street pic but it wasn’t enough , I needed more than a pretty French car to make my pic , what I needed was unclear but I knew I needed more …

Having established that this car and location had photographic potential I started framing up the pic , considering the lines , light and compositional variations in the hope that my requirements would become clearer , this “first look” failed to inform me of what I needed within the frame but it did inform where the space that needed activity was situated !

Having established where I wanted something to happen within my frame I had one remaining problem , the lighting was not ideal , this was a classic English summer sunny day, the shadows were a little too deep for my taste , I knew that fill flash would be needed to get the contrast under control , no sooner had I established my capture plan and this “Red Lady” entered the frame and stopped , I’m not quite sure why she stopped but she stopped in just the right place , I noticed how the bag echoed the shape of the wheel arch immediately and thought I could be onto something …

These graphic design pics require a different approach and mindset to the fleeting moments pics , higher levels of compositional consideration are necessary to get these quieter pictures to sing , street photography is not always “Flash , Bang , Wallop” !

Sometimes a slow considered approach can pay dividends , you have to see the shapes , shadows , lines and light as a opportunity to design a pic that goes beyond the moment …

Hooray , The Foto What I Took blog has reached number 40 , that is a lot of thoughts , pictures and words that have led to a lot of visitors to this site , thank you for popping in …

If I had not made this capture myself I would be very suspicious of this picture , the coloured flag shadow on this blokes shirt still seems unlikely to me !

This picture was made towards the tail end of my Another Day Off series , looking back it would appear that I was already shooting the State Of Britain series subconsciously , the flag features heavily in the last few pics of my first serious study of England .

I noticed the phenomenon of this flag shadow from a distance , I noticed that when the breeze blew the plastic flags these colourful shadows appeared on this shirt , he never noticed me as I waited for the the sun and breeze to do their thing with the translucent bunting …

I had not witnessed this “projection” phenomenon before making this picture and have not had the chance to repeat this trick since , as always I’m always looking for more and this picture delivered that too , have you noticed how the fluttering flag on the left aligns perfectly with the mans neck just above his ear , I could never of done that deliberately , the white bits of the flag showing as black on the shirt was also a welcome twist ?

Its these little things that keep me looking and shooting , the world still surprises me with small insignificant events, although these visual treats remain extremely significant to me …

If I had not made this capture myself I would be very suspicious of this picture …

No sooner was the ink dry on this blog and I came across this , fence and flag shadow , coincidence ?

Fence & Flag Shadow , 2022

THE FOTO WHAT I TOOK , NO 38 , 2019.

Thought I would flag this up , recent events have encouraged me to re-examine my own thoughts, memories and work !

I was surprised to see the Regent Street flag display compared to Nazi Germany the other day , I’m not naïve, I understand this response , its not a million miles away from my own instincts when I photographed the far right marching down Whitehall with the flag in 1980 but its not the same , its interesting to see how “The Flag” is borrowed , misused and corrupted as a political and commercial symbol by so many groups with various levels of integrity, intent and understanding , “The Flag” has become the UK icon of everything in 2022 which in turn has diminished or at least confused its meaning and significance to everyone !

I’m old enough to remember a time when the flag carried less baggage than it does now , the flag has become increasingly politicised & commercialised in modern Britain , a Britain that has many more food banks than McDonalds restaurants !

The Regent Street display appears to have opened up a debate of what the flag means in twenty first century England , I say England because this debate becomes increasingly complicated when opened up to the other countries that makeup the UK , “The Flag” features heavily in my State Of Britain series as the Brexit era certainly promoted increased levels of nationalism , this increased feeling of patriotism was reflected visually on the streets of England in many forms which is why it appears in my series so often , as I made my flag based photographs I was never certain of the “Flag Wavers” intent , the flag waving intention is almost always ambiguous , in short the waving of a nations flag is no longer seen as a simple act of national pride by some , it has been corrupted , appropriated and associated with supermarkets , small cars , far right political groups and anyone else who can print it or wave it nowadays , sadly in 2022 we have to look beyond the flag and examine the the motivations of flag wavers to understand or gain a insight into intentions, it is no longer the simple act that it once was , in 2022 those waving the nations flag are viewed with suspicion , rightly or wrongly , check out the State Of Britain series to see more “Ambiguous” iconography from the Brexit era …

The content of the picture below is shot as found , it does not help me with the intent question , in fact it confuses me , it is either a very sarcastic display or a patriotic own goal , proof if proof were needed that this national icon really does mean different things to different folk , its all down to your personal interpretation …

I grew up in a shipbuilding community and used to get pulled out of school to stand by the roadside and wave “The Flag” on what felt like the coldest and longest of days when royalty drove past at speed and ships were launched , I never ever saw the Queen or a ship launched as a kid , I stood by that road for hours , although I did grow up to become the official photographer for the launch of the Shields Ferry , one of the last vessels to be built by Swan , Hunters and launched on the Tyne ,

The glory days of flag waving , living the dream and freezing my bits off , I’m not bitter, honest …

This picture provokes different responses from different folk , I’m not sure if this product should be purchased by patriots or anarchists ?

On a day filled with plenty of UK flag waving shenanigans and lots of monarchy malarkey I thought I would share this picture today …

Cards on the table I’m a republican but I like “Her-Maj” , not keen on the kids and their offspring though , she deserved better !

I wanted to make this clear as todays picture is one of my fave portraits of the queen , there is no malice or disrespect intended within this photographic representation of the queen but it does make a serious point while raising a smile , this picture is as found , I believe the representation was created with the best of intentions by a charity shop worker with limited resources in the lead up to Megan & Harry’s wedding .

A society that relies on charities to feed its population can no longer afford a monarchy in my view , its as simple as that , nothing personal …

The irony of this image is not wasted on me , this pic is a bit more than a “Funny” pic from a charity shop window , the symbolism and juxtaposition of extreme need (Charity) versus a icon of extreme wealth (Royalty) does not sit well with me …

This pic is from my State Of Britain series , this series reflects the mood of England during the Brexit era , I sincerly wish the Queen the very best for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the rest of her life but I think it is time for the monarchy question to be asked , discussed and reviewed here in the UK , I’m not convinced the modern royals want to do the jobs they were born to do ?

Sometimes you just have to look a little deeper to see the irony and significance , its not funny …

Gatecrashers are not all bad , sometimes they can make a ordinary pic better !

This picture is from my Another Day Off series , it was taken at Durham Miners Gala , a place that Tony Ray Jones photographed almost 50 years earlier when Durham still had active coal mines . The Gala has become a celebration of coal mining , trade unionism and working class culture nowadays and is still a great day out , especially if you have not witnessed this event before …

The original intention of this capture was to capture the lady siting on the grass against a background of cartoon characters , I had noticed the silhouettes of the children playing on the inflatable too , I would of been happy with that scenario but serendipity intervened !

One of the hardest lessons I had to learn from Street Photography was to accept less control within my frames , in the past I would wait until gatecrashers passed through my frame before making the capture , I wanted everything on my terms , not now , I have learned to let risk and serendipity into my process , good things happen if you allow them to occur , enjoy the freedom of losing control and going with the flow …

This uninvited “Random Stranger” entered the frame and unified this composition with a fist full of leaflets entitled UNITY , you couldn’t make it up , the cartoons all appear to be welcoming him into the frame and the lady on the grass is blissfully unaware that she has been visually decapitated by propaganda proposing higher levels of solidarity ?

The bottom line is you have to get out there, be ready and receptive and see what happens , you have to believe in life the universe and everything , give up trying to micro manage the frame and just roll with the moment …

The Durham Miners Gala takes place on the 9th July 2022 , its definitely worth a look !

Good pictures are hard to find but sometimes they find you !

Regular readers of these blogs will be aware of my sincere belief that my Street Photography relies on a deep collaboration with life the universe and everything , it is not my intention to go all “Glastonbury” or “Douglas Adams” on you but the “LUCK” description really does not do it for me !

This picture still surprises me today due to the “Coincidences” that were gifted to me in what was a fleeting moment , the only element of this picture that I controlled was the placement within the frame of the small figure growing out of the headless mans neck , I remember changing my viewpoint in haste by about two feet in order to improve the composition , the small Lord Mayor figure didn’t look right growing out of the subjects shoulder …

The change of viewpoint is the only consideration I remember in the making of this pic , everything else is serendipitous , the headless man and the echo of the decapitated mannequin are gifts that combine perfectly with the “tired” male underwear that appears to harmonise with the man and his “misshaped” suit , none of these details were part of my concious contemplation during the shoot …

I managed three frames before the mans head re-appeared and he shuffled off , two more than usual but I never noticed any of the details that I value so highly now at the time of capture , all I did was walk around the corner and collect this gift that life , the universe and everything had secretly planned for me , make no mistake I’m extremely grateful and genuinely astonished by the alignments of life that Street Photography allows me to share …

The strange thing is , I usually possess high levels of optimism and expectation , I truly believe that great pictures await me around every street corner and guess what , sometimes they do …

You don’t need the latest bit of Japanese photo tech when life the universe and everything walk each and every step with you ….

On a personal note, the gait of the man in this picture reminds me of the legendary Tyneside photographer Jimmy Forsyth , he would pull pictures from a carrier bag and tell you all about the “Fotos That He Took” , this website has become my carrier bag …

Every now and then life falls into place and delivers a abundance of photographic gifts but you have to be ready to recognise and accept them …

The picture featured here is one of a short series that fell into my lap and was shot within a few hours , these sinkhole pictures are all based around huge site specific paintings that depict historic scenes that appear to give a glimpse of our Roman heritage , the paintings rely on being viewed from one particular viewpoint in order to enjoy the realistic perspective , they are simply laid on the ground and become especially effective when combined with the reality of life from the twenty first century , this is not a computer effected image, this is surrealism as found !

Most of my Street Photography involves trying to make something from nothing but that is not the case here , this is more a case of starting with something that is very photographable and having to do nothing , well not very much anyway !

Just because these “Sinkhole” pictures are easy to see and capture does not make them second best to me , its all too easy to get caught up in the “ I hung from a tree by my bollocks for 3 hours before firing the shutter“ narrative , difficulty and complexity of capture does not add extra value in my opinion , it either works or it doesn’t , no one care’s about the “difficulties” …

Keep it simple , collect the low bearing fruit where and when you can without guilt , your the one who recognized the photo opportunity …

These photographic gifts do not turn up everyday , you really have to make the most of them when they do , don’t regret the pictures you failed to make and don’t fall into the hole of unnecessary complexity …

Why shoot a single pic when a short series awaits …

“Fill ya boots” when you can , no one cares if you hung from a tree by your bollocks for three hours before firing the shutter , pick the low bearing fruit where and when you can …

It’s all a bit disingenuous this sharing “Best Pictures” shenanigans but we all do it !

The thing is we all give the impression that we exist in a bubble of photographic success and picture perfection but secretly embrace bucket loads of failure behind closed doors , nothing wrong with failure in street photography , its part of the process & journey towards success !

Reading these Foto What I Took blogs back I realised that I gave the impression of high levels of competence , ability and luck , nothing could be further from the truth !

My competence and ability are supported by a pedestal of regular failures that I never share (until today) and my luck is the bi-product of persistence sacrifice and hard work , the persistence , hard work and sacrifice can be the stumbling block for many , lets be clear, making good pictures is not easy but its not beyond most folk with a work ethic !

You can read as many “how to” Street Photography books as you like but you will not develop as a photographer unless you put in the hard yards and swallow heaps of disappointment out on the streets !

Todays featured picture failed , it is one of many failures from this shoot that did not make the cut during the edit , the reason it is featured here is that the importance of the edit rarely gets a mention and in my view shot selection should not be underestimated , culling the “Nearly” pictures is a important photographic skill , its what makes the good ones good !

To edit a shoot successfully you have to identify your aims and objectives , learning what a “GOOD” capture looks like is a important skill to develop whether you are behind a camera or a keyboard , recognising and axing the failures makes the good ones shine brighter , be ruthless , no excuses, cull the nearly pictures they are holding your photography back , raise the bar and ask yourself is “OKAY” , okay ?

Give the impression of a 100 % hit rate with the pictures you share , we all know that the real hit rate of good photographers is nearer one in one hundred but we don’t mention the failures …

Conversely new photographers have higher hit rates , that’s not because they are better than seasoned togs but because they are still working out their own personal interpretation of “Good” , it can’t all be good …

Street Photography should become more difficult with time as seasoned photographers demand more from themselves !

Learning from failures will feed your success , learn to fail with a smile on your face …

“Nearly pictures” dilute the strength of the good stuff , get rid of them or use them in a blog about photographic failure !

I know , I know , this isolated colour tint thing with Black & White prints is not for everyone , I’m not certain it is for me either but I have to admit to liking it in this pic …

Strangely the colour tint thing is not the only element that creates conflicts within me in this pic but I’m not going there today , I’m going to be “good” ?

This photograph is from my Closed Doors Series and it is what it says , a series of photographs featuring doors that are closed , many of them permanently , it is a very simple set of pictures that was a response to austerity, it genuinely took me by surprise , once you strip back the approach and reduce the “Effects” the most mundane subjects can display integrity and beauty if you allow them to breath , photography doesn’t have to be about fancy pants technique …

Once again The Foto What I Took Blog has helped me uncover another picture that had been long forgotten , the tint and the mono version is just me ignoring my own advice and messing about in Photoshop during the last bank holiday for this blog …

I never imagined I would rework this picture like this , I never imagined I would question the voting advice of this picture but time changes everything …

I know I said I would be good but I do wonder if that poster should have a blue tint until Keith exits stage right or maybe I should adopt independant green tints until a viable opposition appears …
