“The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum” , The State Of Britain Series , No 2 , 2016 .

Todays picture is probably one of my more significant captures , in fact as time passes it appears to become more important !

This picture is a early capture from my The State Of Britain Project , this project is a visual record of England during the Brexit era between 2016 -2020 , I think it is fair to describe this photograph as a signature piece within the series …

In order to understand the context of this picture a understanding of the divisive 2016 political landscape is necessary , Boris Johnston had just led the Brexit “Leave” campaign to a 52% - 48% victory in the EU referendum , instigating the resignation of the then Prime Minister David Cameron who led the campaign to “Remain” , Johnson went on to become Foreign Secretary in Theresa Mays Tory Government before she too found herself unable to continue !

As we all know Johnson then went on to become PM ,defeating Jeremy Corbyn in the 2019 election , the words Covid , Pandemic and lockdown had not yet entered common usage at this time but that’s another story for another series !

“The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum” slogan summed up the anger , disbelief and frustration felt by many who did not want to leave The European Super state , this was especially true of the young people who had never known a independent UK in their lifetime , a genuine sense of loss was felt by many … I think that sadness is reflected in this picture …

One of the things that struck me about this image was the lack of smiles , despite the dancing , great weather carnival atmosphere and loud music , no one was smiling, including the caricature of “BOJO THE CLOWN” he just looked out towards the camera with a deadpan expression and a lipstick kiss on his cheek !

I associate this weekend in 2016 with the beginning of the State Of Britain project and the beginning of the uncertainty that remains …

I remember the afternoon I shot this picture very well as I tend to chronicle my life through the “Better” pictures that I make , I had only just completed my Another Day Off project weeks before and had not fully established the idea of The State Of Britain Project within my own mind , I suspected significant change lay ahead following the Brexit vote but I had no idea of how this change would manifest itself visually within my day to day and what my new series of pictures would look like , in short I was winging it , change would not wait for me to get my act together , I needed to make a start …

The State Of Britain series was very much a response to what I knew were changing times , I didn’t have a detailed plan , I’m not sure our elected representatives did either ? .

I recognised that for once I was in the right place at the right time , to tell this story . This was my chance to photographically respond to events that were of historic significance , I never imagined the project would last as long as it has or that life would be as chaotic as it has become …

Let me be clear this picture is not a “By Chance Observation” , this picture really is the result of hard work , I had no desire to shoot “Another” carnival in Another Day Off style , I was looking for a bit more , I was looking for everyday reflections of the response to Brexit life , however that looked or whatever that was and this carnival float reflected the uncertainties perfectly …

I invested the whole day making pictures around this “BOJO” artwork , I knew that the BOJO portrait had the potential to contribute to a important picture , I hoped that the right picture could / would anchor my new Brexit themed series and become the signature pic !

I’m always on the lookout for scenarios that can become iconic representations of time and place , its not easy , you have to have one eye in the here and now and another on the future , significance is a difficult trick in a unpredictable world !

I always wanted the State Of Britain project to be a genuine record of the Brexit era and was aware of my responsibility to remain apolitical, which is not easy for me , my ambitions were to make a responsible piece of work that went beyond propaganda and gave a genuine sense of these divisive , uncertain times !

I’m really proud of this project and look forward to sharing these pictures with a larger audience , if and when some form of normality returns ?

Brexit and Covid still feel unresolved to me , its been one hell of a journey …

I understand that folk are still perplexed and confused by what has happened here , I am too …

This is a totally reactive spontaneous capture that delivered a extra surprise that I failed to notice at the time , I thought the horses head and the girls crossing the road were worthy of a speculative capture but I did not expect the “equine themed” photo bomb promotion !

I had never considered the concept of advertising targeted at animals until I shot this , I didn’t realise that subliminal food promotions aimed at horses was a thing , it doesn’t feel right to me !

I was in Dublin for the Obscure Street Photography Exhibition and managed to make a few pics , drink a few beers and meet some nice folk , I can wholeheartedly recommend Dublin as a Street Photography location …

No, its not carrot’s , they get a full half hour and not a minute more …

A special blog for April Fools Day ,

Caught Out By UK Fools Day

I got caught out by fools day today , I didn’t see it coming

Bigger fool me …

Everyday feels like Fools Day , nowadays

A day dedicated to fools , who’d of thought

No days for sensible folk , no sensible folk left …

They've made fools of us all …

These are halcyon days for those who fool us …

Dark days for those who don’t …

We’re led by fools , we follow their rules …

Sadly , It will be fools day tomorrow too …

We’re all fools now …

Having scrambled through my picture files under “PH” looking for “PHools” I discovered a Fotograph of a fool performing for a audience of one , a very wise man …

This is the first picture from what became my Blue Frames Project and I’m not sure I ever bettered it within the series , which is a bit of a bummer when I look back and realise that the project was in decline from day one , not because its a series of bad pictures but because I got very lucky, very quickly , within minutes of buying the Blue Framed Mirror from my local charity shop this pic was in the bag !

The Blue Frames Project was intended to be a conceptual project but between buying the mirror and getting it back to my car I captured this view , all of the other pics in the series are conceptual , this pic happened before any meaningful conceptual thought had occurred !

Truth be told I was carrying a load of shopping and a bloody big mirror and I needed to rest , my get up and go had got up and gone !

I stood the mirror up against the wall of a local pub and became aware of the visual possibilities of this happy accident immediately , before too long the fragmented shadow of a passer-by and his reflected foot conspired to complete the composition , job done …

Despite carrying too much including a great big mirror my camera was still around my neck from a earlier shot , optimism or stupidity …

Better to be lucky than clever …

The fragmented shadow and the reflected foot conspired to complete the composition .

“Billboards With Clouds Obscure My View Of The Sky”.

The first thing that needs clearing up with this picture is the source of inspiration , without the influence of Luigi Ghirri I don’t get to discover the thread of thoughts that lead to this capture or even see this picture in the context that I do , I highly recommend the work of Luigi Ghirri to those photographers who want to expand their pallet of creative photographic thoughts …

What’s this picture about then ? Thanks for asking , this picture is about man made objects within the built environment interfering with the natural elements , this picture explores the juxtaposition and irony of a large artificial representation of the sky ( A Photograph on a billboard ) interrupting my actual view of the real sky …

Its a simple view , simple capture and simple concept that possesses hidden depths in my view , once you get your head into it , the screw heads and shadows are a important part of this picture …

This graphic view could be interpreted as a comment on photography itself …

Proof that this Street Photography thing can manifest itself in many forms , it doesn’t have to be a load of old shadowy bollocks …

Look deeper …

This picture is about the irony of man made objects , (artifice) obscuring the view of the reality it is trying to represent.

“The Morning After The Night Before” .

I made this picture in Sardinia while out very early one morning seeking good light and good coffee , I had attended the Alghero Street Photography Awards the night before and was feeling more than a little fragile . This was shot at about 7.30am , which felt like stupid o’oclock to me but lots of local folk were out and about on the sea front !

I discovered this open air cafe near my hotel and was quite taken by the hand painted back rests on the cafe stools , I knew a picture opportunity awaited I just needed to get my act together , I was desperate for a coffee and nothing was going to stand between me and that , as I drank two strong Italian coffees I developed a plan, I knew the “Seaside Postcard Vibe” stools were about to feature in my next photograph , I just needed to finish my drink and wait for the all important conspiracy of coincidence to occur !

I didn’t have to wait long for this moment to arrive , I had a fully formed idea of what I wanted / expected , proof if proof were needed that a hung-over photographer can still see a pic the morning after the night before with the assistance of caffeine , although most of you reading this are probably already aware of that …

Street Photography always feels much easier in holiday locations , the consistent light and happy go lucky mindset always delivers for me , I like working when everyone is relaxed and having a good time , happiness definitely helps me to see pictures !

Just for the record , “ it doesn’t look big in those , honest “ and strong coffee does fix creative block …

“Old” Photographer takes new picture , shock !

Todays picture is relatively recent , 16 .3 . 22 , it is featured here because it helps me illustrate a important observation , this picture is unlike anything else in my main body of work , it’s a bit too subtle and quiet for me …

This “Two Tin Sheds” picture surprises me because of my familiarity to this view , I have walked past this location many times and never even noticed the subtle hues of the tin shed on the right of this frame, let alone try to make a picture of it , why did I notice the subtle beauty of this unremarkable view on this particular dull dreary misty morning ?

The takeaway point of this blog is that your everyday might look and stay exactly the same as it always has but that does not mean that you should look at it the same way as you always have or take it for granted , this photography thing is not really about how the world looks , it is about how you respond to how the world looks today , it might , could / should change tomorrow !

I do wonder if we are all guilty of a form of photographic blindness brought on by what we consider to be “too familiar” , perhaps we should be looking deeper at what we think we already know ?

The truth is that this view and the elements within it may not have changed very much over the years , therefore , my photographic response to this subtle familiar scene on this particular day suggests that I have …

Older readers might recognise the source of “inspiration” for the “The Foto What I Took” blog title , coconuts all round for those who spotted the Morcambe and Wise “The Play What I Wrote“ reference …

This picture is part of my Covid era project , “Testing Times” and is different to most of the other pictures within this documentary series as it is inspired by how life felt during those dark days rather than how life looked !

This picture surprises me on a number of levels , looking back I am unable to remember what possessed me to go out looking for photographs on such a cold wet miserable winters day , I might of been suffering from lockdown “Cabin Fever” or perhaps I had a episode of blind optimism , either way I’m pleased I did ! The other thing that still surprises me is the appearance of the lone figure within this image , this location is quite remote and pedestrians are not plentiful , even in normal weather , not only did this guy turn up but he came into shot at just the right time , I had noticed the space and acknowledged that a pedestrian filling that space would be the compositional equivalent of a cherry on the cake but I did not hold out much hope , this was not a day for hanging about and waiting ?

I recognised the covered car as a classic metaphor for lock down life , Stephen Shore and Wim Wenders exploited the covered car motif within their work for years , long before the Covid crisis and long before I shot this but I think it took on a new deeper significance during the societal pandemic shut down !

I see this picture as a optimistic image , despite the bad weather , the juxtaposition of the red berried bush and the cold blue hues of the domestic scene suggest that eventually life will recover ..

One day the covers will come off …

Sometimes you have to put your shoes on and go and see what is happening out there , curiosity , should be the curse of being a photographer …

I think the covered car motif took on a new significance during the pandemic shut down !

I’m a big fan of visual decapitation and have to admit that headless figures are a recurring theme within my work , not sure what a head doctor would make of it but I can’t deny my addiction to this macabre visual device !

I promise I don’t go out looking for headless folk , they just appear , honest !

I think of todays featured picture as “A Gathering Of Male Political Leaders” , that probably says more about my uncertainties and insecurities right now than it does about the featured pic , especially as I don’t usually give my pictures titles …

I have to admit to being drawn to the headless mannequins initially but the real prize within this picture is the soft light entering the frame from the right as it falls off to darkness , I should also point out that the colour has not been removed from the file , this is as found !

In short this simple photograph adds up to much more than the sum of its parts , it relies totally on its own simplicity.

Successful photographs do not have to be the result of fancy pants all singing and dancing composition and lighting , sometimes aesthetic simplicity is visual strength !

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs …

This candid capture is probably my favorite candid capture , ever !

I still can’t believe how the world aligned , allowing me to capture this politically themed moment that became part of my The State Of Britain series .

The picture shows a lady wearing a Theresa May mask on the back of her head while carrying a baby , a number of characters from British history to present date can be seen in the background , Theresa May was the Prime Minister , at a time when Britain was still trying understand the implications of the 2016 Brexit referendum leave vote , a sense of uncertainty , insecurity and division prevailed .

The surreal nature of this photograph suggests a number of interpretations , some kinder than others , head on the wrong way , looking to the past etc , etc , I’ll let you work out your own interpretation , this whole Brexit episode remains bitterly divisive to this day …

Truth be told , this is little more than a view from a summer carnival where the characters from a “British History” themed carnival float are waiting around in the shade before the start of the carnival parade , this was not a political rally or protest , this surprising scenario just turned up coincidentally and met the visual agenda of my Brexit era series perfectly , those who have read my blogs before will be aware of my sincere belief that the best pictures find me , this is one of those , this picture has always made me feel more like the recipient of a serendipitous gift rather than a hard working creator of a very unusual photograph …
